THE Community First Panel in Victoria ward has received praise from the Government body that oversees charities, social enterprises and voluntary organisations.

The Office of Civil Society gave the thumbs-up to the Community First Panel at Victoria Park Community Centre for the work they have done in the community.

Renee Smith-Gorringe, policy manager at the Office of Civil Society, said: “It was great to hear how the community centre has grown from strength to strength over the last 18 months and it was also great to hear how appreciated the Community First money has been.”

Altogether £30,000 had been allocated for projects over the last three years which Cllr Mick Lerry, chair of the Community First Panel, says has been put to good use.

He said: “Thanks to the funding we have been able to help a number of projects over the last three years, such as the Victoria Job Club and the Victoria Park Cycle Club.

The money has also helped provide training for Homestart volunteers as well as allowing us to make a contribution to the boiler at St George’s Hall.

“We gave funding to ACTS Summer Activity Week, and also helped fund the Victoria Park Summer Fete.”
