ENTERING puzzles in her favourite magazine has paid off for Olive Welch after she won a trolley dash around Sainsbury’s in Chard.

The 87-year-old has been doing puzzles in Take a Break for over 20 years and couldn’t believe her luck when she heard the news.

She said: “I always fancied winning a trolley dash – I thought it was something I could really take advantage of, but it’s typical that I won it when I’m too old to complete the task!”

Thinking quickly, Olive asked her son-in-law, Andy Kenton, to do the dash for her.

She said: “I knew he’d research it and do me proud.”

Andy managed to get £500 worth of food during the dash.

He said: “It was great fun – you had to put trolleys near where you think you’d need a new one, and the Take a Break staff and Sainsburys were so supportive.

“You weren’t allowed any electrical items or alcohol or cigarettes, just groceries, and you weren’t allowed more than one of the same thing, but you could have different sizes or brands of that one item, so, for example, I got a large turkey and a medium turkey.

“Before you enter you have to submit an estimate of how much you think you’ll get in the trolley in the five minutes and if you’re close you get a £500 bonus.

“Olive submitted £500 as a guess and luckily I got £521, so she got the bonus.

“I can’t believe how quickly the five minutes went – it really was brilliant.”

Generous Olive has already been donating the food and money she won to her family and friends, including her daughter, Mayor Jenny Kenton, who said: “Mum’s also taking quite a lot of the chocolate Andy put in her basket over to France, where my sister has been in hospital for two months, for the nurses.

“I think she’s getting as much enjoyment from giving her winnings away as she did from winning.”
