UP TO 150 homes could be built in Chard after councillors backed plans for 78 homes – with another application for 72 more being submitted.

South Somerset District Council approved plans to build 78 homes in Avishayes Road.

Applicant Phillip Storey made the application in November 2012 and it was finally approved at the start of this month.

The council said: “The proposed development forms part of Option 1 of the Chard Regeneration Plan and will provide 78 dwellings, including affordable homes, which will help meet the housing need for Chard. The scheme will also provide a small but important section of the link road proposed as part of the Chard Regeneration Plan.”

Developers say 20 of the 78 homes will be ‘affordable’.

Plans were on display at the Guildhall on Friday and Monday for 72 homes in Crewkerne Road. Of those homes, 15 are planned to be affordable with six of those being flats.

Developer CG Fry says the development would help fulfil housing needs in the area.

Cllr Tony Prior said: “We have been waiting for this application and the council will examine the plans and consider them – and then make their decision.”

In a letter attached with the application, the developer said the site had good access to all main facilities with local amenities close by in walking and cycling distance. But already objections have been listed with the council.

Commenting on the application, Chard resident Rachel Webb said the application did not meet the community’s need.

She added: “The affordable housing percentage should be increased. What about the impact of schooling and health requirements?”

The district council is set to make a decision on the plans for the 72 homes by December 30.
