DRIVERS on the Somerset Levels and Moors are being urged to take more care and heed signs put in place following road closures for flood protection work.

Residents have raised concerns about speeding vehicles and lorries using the road from the A361 at Burrowbridge towards Langport, passing through Stathe and Wicke.

The route has now become a popular cut through following the closure of Aller Drove while flood protection works are being carried out.

In response to concerns, Somerset County Council has put signs in place reminding motorists to be speed-aware and that the road is not suitable for HGVs.

However, there are continued reports of cars driving too fast and lorries using the route.

Cllr Harvey Siggs, cabinet member for highways, said: “We understand that road closures add time to journeys but that is no excuse for ignoring signs and jeopardising people’s safety.

“I urge motorists to drive carefully and appreciate the concerns of local residents who use this road, sometimes on foot.”
