THE girlfriend of a young man from Chard killed in a hit and run incident last year is taking part in a fundraising event in his memory.

Former Holyrood Academy student Jake Gilmore, 19, suffered head injuries when he was knocked from his bike in Bath on November 16.

He was taken to hospital but died the next day.

Now his girlfriend, Georgina Parry, is taking part in an event to raise money for charity.

She said she hopes she can prevent someone else meeting the same fate as Jake.

Georgina is taking part in a mud runner event on Sunday to raise money for road safety charity Brake.

Georgina, 19, from Taunton, said: “We were together for a year and seven months.

“Jake was just the most gentlemanly person I’ve ever met. He was a big softie and in the two years I knew him I never saw him angry once.

“Everyone deals with grief differently and I didn’t want his death to be in vain – I want to help other people from this.”

Jake’s mum, Sue Gilmore, said: “We feel really touched that Georgina has felt moved to take some positive action that may in some way go towards preventing other people going through what we have had to experience.

“It has also come to our attention that Brake has a National Road Safety Week beginning on November 17, exactly one year since Jake’s death.

“It’s obviously still a very difficult time for us with this anniversary approaching but as a family that cycles we want to prompt people to think about road safety.”

Charity Roadpeace, which supports road crash victims and campaigns for safer roads, will also be paying tribute to Jake.

It has a day of remembrance on November 16 and Jake’s name will be mentioned.
