MEMBERS of the Thursday Fellowship group at Wellington Baptist Church saved up 2,200 5p coins and donated the money to a cancer charity that helps equip the Beacon Centre cancer unit at Taunton’s Musgrove Park Hospital.
Other 5p collections handed over to the County Gazette-backed SURE initiative included £6 from Brenda Coombs, of Highbridge; £20 from Helen Cottrell; £9.15 from the New Horizon Singers; and £5.75 from the Old Sale Rooms, Wellington.
Meanwhile, £1,000 was raised for SURE through several whist drives at Rockwell Green Village Hall, and £657 was presented by John Langley and the Burnham and District Model Railway Club following the sale of 135 model railway six-wheel tankers.
Other donations included £92.17 from several collection pots at Hurleys of Burnham; £18.30 from Gwen Slocombe, of Highbridge; £2.64 from a collection pot at Rumwell Farm Shop; and £21- from the Easter raffle at the Castle Club, Bridgwater, who also collected £171.90 in 5ps.
The £159.15 from the Beacon Centre included £142.35 in 5ps.
This week’s total is £2,429 76, taking the amount raised since SURE teamed up with the County Gazette to £47,564.54.
