A WEST Huntspill beekeeper has triumphed at this year’s County Honey Show.

Janet O’Neill was awarded the coveted Jubilee Cup presented to the beekeeper with the most points gained at the Show. And she also won the Terry Arnold Challenge Trophy for the most points gained in cookery classes.

Beekeepers from all over Somerset swarmed to the show on Saturday held for the first time at Long Sutton, near Langport.

Joe King, show secretary, said the day was a great success and well supported by members of Somerset Beekeepers’ Association as well as by the public.

There were more than 500 entries in 52 classes spanning honey, hive products and honey cookery at the historic show, which dates back to 1885.

During the afternoon, visitors enjoyed tasting various local honeys, watching bees in action inside an observation hive, seeing the equipment used in this ancient craft and talking to local beekeepers about keeping bees and growing bee-friendly gardens.

Alongside the Honey Show there was a bee-themed farmers’ market staged by local food producers and crafts people.

RESULTS The Miss M D Bindley Cup, awarded to the winner of medium honey: Cath Frazer of Stoke-sub-Hampdon.

The Duffin Challenge Trophy for the most points gained in wax classes: Jenny Dennes of Shapwick.

The Clifford Langford Award for the most points gained in the mead classes: Suzy Perkins, of Langport.
