MORE than half of adults believe new drivers aged under 21 should not be let loose on motorways after passing their test.

In a study for Direct Line DrivePlus, which asked people what measures they thought would improve road safety for young motorists, 53% said drivers aged 17-21 should only be allowed on motorways after racking up significant driving experience.

Some 58% said there should be a limit to the number of passengers that drivers in this age bracket can take, while 53% said new drivers should have to show a ā€˜Pā€™ Probationary symbol on their car for a period after passing their test. Ā
