A SUPERB gross level par 70 by Dave Porter on Saturday brought him the top spot in the September Medal at Brean.

With his 8 handicap taken off it gave him a stunning nett 62 and a handicap reduction to 7 for his next competition.

He led the way by some distance from Russell Shaw who had a nett 66, which matched the winner’s score in Division Two.

Martyn Cahill was the owner of that scorecard and, like Porter, he saw his handicap reduced as a result. Neil Barker was the runner-up just one shy of Cahill's score.

Division Three saw a familiar name at the head of the leaderboard. In- form Gordy Wheelaghan led the way with a nett 69 ahead of a trio of players with 72 of which Tony Romeo was awarded second spot after a countback.

The following day, father and son duo Brian and Jeff Read both tasted victory in the September Monthly Stableford as they both topped their respective Divisions.

Brian was the top dog in the second flight with his card of 36 points which beat John Mardon by a point. Early starter Jeff also posted 36 points but enjoyed a two-shot winning margin over Jim McLauchlan.

Neither Read had the best score of the day as a trio of 37 point cards were returned by Division One players.

Richard Triscott had the better back nine of the three to claim first place ahead of Mark Hatfield and Steve Bateman.

Mike Drayton had a superb round of golf on Thursday morning as he won round three of the Seniors Eclectic event. He took just 90 strokes to complete the course and when his handicap of 26 was deducted his nett 64 was five clear of the nearest challenger.

Barrie Tucker was that player with his nett 69 while Roger Phillips edged out Jim McLauchlan on a countback after they both went round in nett 70s.

Roger Phillips also took the Veterans Trophy with a 38 point score on Tuesday.

The result was a close-run thing, though, as Seniors Captain Allen Fellingham matched his score but lost out on a countback to Phillips.

To complete a busy week the Seniors had their final away fixture of the year, which ended on a high note as they recorded their second win of the season away from Brean.

They beat the Minehead Warreners by 3.5 to 2.5 in West Somerset with, yet again, Barry Fisher featuring in the Team of the Day. He paired up with George Thomas, who more than contributed to the pair reaching 4 up after 11 holes before Fisher took over coming home to close out the win.

Brean PGA Professional Andrew March bowed out of the Gloucester and Somerset PGA Matchplay Championship at the Semi-final stage last week.

Playing at Chipping Sodbury, he won his first two matches on day one but missed by a single hole to eventual winner Daryl Kelley in the Semi Final on the second morning.
