HEALTH walks around Chard and South Somerset have been made easier to find after a programme was released.

South Somerset District Council has launched the scheme which now has over 50 active volunteers helping to lead walks across South Somerset.

Charlie Coward, Healthy Lifestyles Officer at the council, said: “Regular walking has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke and some cancers.

“It is also a great way to meet new people and explore the beautiful countryside we have on our doorstep.

“Due to increased demand for information about our walks we are producing a directory three times a year.

“The directory includes 14 different walks stretching from Chard to Wincanton and catering for a variety of abilities.”

Sylvia Seal, portfolio holder for leisure and culture at South Somerset District Council, said: “This directory will help to show residents exactly what is on offer on their doorsteps.

“I am delighted that our scheme has received Walking for Health accreditation. It is a quality assurance mark and means that people can take part in our walks with confidence.
