A TAUNTON girl is all fired up for a surprise trip to Legoland after her mum nominated her to receive a special thank you for supporting her through her studies with the Open University.

While many parents across the country are bracing themselves to support their children through their university studies, Taunton-based OU student Sarah Hoban’s story is a heart-warming case of role-reversal.

Throughout her study working towards a degree in English Language and Literature, Sarah’s ten-year-old daughter, Zoe, has been a pillar of strength.

To let Zoe know just how meaningful and special her support has been to her, Sarah nominated her for a surprise thankyou as part of a new Open University campaign.

As Zoe is an avid Lego fan, the Open University arranged a surprise special delivery containing tickets for Legoland in Windsor and a personalised thankyou letter.

Mum Sarah said: “Zoe has been a rock and I’m so pleased I’ve been able to go some way to showing her how special she is.

“From lending me her laptop when mine broke to making me cups of tea when I’ve had tight deadlines for essays, she has been amazing.

“Studying as an adult when you have a job and family can be difficult at times, but with supportive family and friends behind us it really helps.”

Zoe said: “I was very happy when I got the present in the mail because I didn’t expect this to happen. “

I think I got the present because Mummy is really, really proud of me. I was really good when she was doing her essays.

“This is my first time going to Legoland – I’m excited about learning how to drive a Lego car.”

Lucian Hudson, director of Communications at the Open University, said: “We’re delighted to be able to help Sarah arrange a special thankyou for Zoe. “

Sarah’s among the 70% of OU students who fit study around work. “Studying with the OU involves commitment not only from the student themselves, but also from those around them who offer support along the way.

“Zoe has been a true star.”
