POLICE in Burnham have classified another street in the town as a ‘no cold calling’ zone.

Willis Court was enrolled in the scheme this week with all residents receiving a sticker to put on their windows or door stating ‘No uninvited sales people – police will be called”.

The advice to residents from the police states: “For the scheme to be successful residents need to make a stand together.

“Saying ‘no’ to cold callers (and continuing to do so) in this manner will reduce the chances of you or your neighbours falling victim to distraction burglaries and bogus callers.

Sgt Tracy Marlow, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: “We visited residents of Wil-lis Court to help make them aware of the initiative and posters have been put up to warn people that preying on residents won’t be tolerated.”

Surveys by the police show over 95% of people do not want traders knocking on their doors and want to contact traders directly if they need work doing.

The scheme is not designed to stop regular people on their rounds, those who leave catalogues or meter readers.

To report cold callers, call Avon and Somerset Police on 101 — the information will also be passed to Trading Standards.
