A GIANT water slide which will be making its way through the centre of Chard next month has cost more than expected.

Chard Town Council had to make a road closure application to Somerset County Council and members have been meeting with police to ensure the public's safety on the day.

The bill is almost £700 for the road closure and Mayor Jenny Kenton, who is organising the event, said it will be a tribute to the community of Chard all pulling together to make it a success.

She said: “We have had offers of monetary help from some local business' and now we need people to help us to staff the event on the day.

“We're all really excited about the event because it has never happened before in Chard -it should be great fun but we need help from people.”

The event is on Sunday, September 7, from 10am till 4pm and around 300 people will be able to give it a go.

It would replicate an event which took place in Bristol earlier this year, which saw people travelling from all over the country to take part.

The slide will be open for everyone over the age of six, those under 1.20 metres will be able to slide later in the afternoon when the slide is shortened to allow younger children to take part.

The council say it is essential to pre-book as participants will not be able to turn up and slide on the day.

Tickets cost £5 for adults and children aged six to 16 cost £2.50 and you must book before Monday, September 1.

Money raised from the event will go to the Mayor's five charities - Chard Museum, Chard and Crewkerne After Stroke Care, Chard Carers Support Group, the Chard Town Team and the Chard Area Youth Committee.

Registration forms are available from the Guildhall and payment must be made in advance.

There will be a choice of times available but book early to avoid disappointment.

A wristband system will be in operation, which will be issued when you have completed the booking and paid.
