A VACANT pub in Bridgwater could be demolished to make way for a block of 14 flats.

The plans are for the Withy Cutter in Frederick Road with a building between two and three storeys planned.

The 1960s pub and its skittles alley would be flattened under the scheme for nine one-bed flats and five two-bed flats.

The developers, Land Promotions Ltd, say the choice of design will ensure it will blend in with existing houses on the street with a green ‘buffer’ next to the pavement and a landscaped area at the front of the building.

The developers say in their design and access statement that: “The development will provide much needed single occupancy and small family accommodation to supplement the two- and three-bedroom family housing provision already present.

“The development will greatly enhance a currently unkempt and unattractive corner site and remove an unsightly derelict building of no architectural and urban design merit.”

The access to the new homes would be from Wyndam Road.

John Stucky, of Bridgwater & District’s Civic Society’s planning sub-committee, said: “It’s sad news. A lot of pubs are disappearing in the town.

“There’s a homes plan for the Pig & Whistle and The Hope Inn is also up for sale. It isn’t a good time for our pubs.”
