ALMOST a year after its launch, a scheme encouraging shoppers to shop local, is proving to be a success.

Over 100 businesses in Minehead have signed up to the Minehead Loyalty Scheme ‘Shop Local’ initiative, with over 3,000 loyalty cards having been printed to date.

The scheme aims to encourage customers to shop in the town by signing up and collecing stickers in each place where they spend £2.50 or more.

Once they have colected ten stickers, they can post their cards to be in with the chance of winning up to £25 in monthly prize draws.

Revive Minehead, the Minehead Tourism & Business Association and Minehead Chamber of Commerce came up with the scheme and had backing from Minehead Town Council and West Somerset Council.

Graham Sizer, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, said: “Our loyalty card scheme Shop Local is one small part of what the Chamber of Commerce and Revive Minehead are trying to do in Minehead.

“There are about 100 people who use their cards regularly and it may have affected where they make their purchases.

“Businesses are very supportive, and our thanks go to the Council for some initial funding.

“Together with other initiatives we are hopeful that a bit of Minehead pride will be fostered.

“There is always more to do, and those who are trying to make a difference won't be taking their foot off of the peddle.

Nicky, from Toucan Wholefoods, which participates in the scheme added: “Anything that encourages people to shop in town is good, it is nice that the Chamber of Commerce takes action.”

A spokesperson from Minehead Sports said: “It seems to be working, it will encourage people. “It’s good that someone is doing something, instead of moaning.
