THE Mayor of North Petherton wants to tighten security in the town after vandals attacked the community centre – the second case of vandalism in just two weeks.

Guttering was pulled from the roof in several places and lead was stolen from the toilets.

The attack came just nine days after vandals set fire to the public toilets located next to the community centre in Fore Street, causing the centre to close them while an insurance claim is made and repairs can take place.

North Petherton Mayor Cllr Alan Bradford said: “I arrived there on Tuesday to find the guttering had been pulled off. These incidents seem to have cropped up again all of a sudden.

“The PCSOs have been informed and we need to be more vigilant.”

When the Mercury asked Cllr Bradford about the possibility of introducing CCTV as a form of crime prevention, he said: “We had away with all that some time ago but it could be a possibility.

“If this continues we might look into that. A regular police presence would help but we don’t seem to get it.”

Deputy Mayor Cllr Anne Hodges said: “We used to have security cameras which were focussed around the centre and car park but since they were disconnected there has been trouble.

“I support the idea of security, absolutely.”
