COMMITTED volunteers from a children’s charity’s Wellington branch have been commended for their efforts at the Somerset Star awards.

Last week the team from Children’s Hospice South West’s Wellington store joined other big-hearted volunteers at an awards ceremony at County Hall in Taunton, to be crowned the winning voluntary organisation.

Sam Williams, assistant manager at Children’s Hospice’s South West store, Sam Williams, said: “I’m very, very proud of the team for achieving this award and being recognised in this way.

“Regardless of ability, everybody has something to offer and everybody has different skills and abilities and we all come together well as a team.”

The entries had been selected at random by Cllr William Wallace, Somerset County Council’s cabinet member for adult social care, having a star named in their honour and presented with ‘star’ awards and certificates.

More than 150 nominations for volunteers deserving of special recognition had been received through the council’s ‘Somerset You can Do’ volunteer recruitment organisation, run during National Volunteers Week held in June.

Cllr Wallace said: “Volunteers are unsung heroes who do so much without asking for anything in return.”
