IT started as an idea over a drink the pub, but now Yarcombe Terrier Racing is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Founder John Salter originally thought up the idea to raise money for the local parish church, St John the Baptist.

Now in his eighties, Mr Salter has handed over the main responsibilities to people in the village, but still enters his dog into the event every year.

The event has become a tradition in East Devon with farmers scrambling to enter popular races. The event has been a continuing success and draws in up to 1,500 people every year.

To celebrate the anniversary, the Otter Brewery will serve a commemorative beer called Hot Terrier, which has been specially created for the evening. Other sponsors are also supporting the event.
