VILLAGERS in Cannington are hoping South West in Bloom judges will award them gold in the prestige competition this year.

The Britain in Bloom South West judges have given great feedback to the Cannington in Bloom committee, which is competing for the Cox Cup for large villages.

Committee secretary Jane Tomaney said: “Cannington in Bloom is run by a group of volunteers; nine on the committee are members of the village.

“They get together every week and we work around the village on different areas in different themes such as horticultural achievement, community participation and environmental responsibility.
“Judges were very positive and we had a feedback session where they said we’d taken all the critiques we got last year and we improved those this year.

“We were awarded a silver gilt last year but hoping for a gold this year. We won’t find out until September 28.”

The judges viewed various locations around the village, including the Walled Gardens of Cannington and the new Victory Border designed by College student Sarah Langley, from Martock, to commemorate the D-Day landings and the start of the First World War.

The border uses vegetables as well as ornamental plantings to depict the work of the Land Girls and members of the public who, as part of the war effort, used all available public spaces to grow food to feed the nation.
