WITH the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow starting on 23 July, budding young athletes will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of their heroes when they run, jump and throw at Yeovil Athletics Arena for Summer ‘Startrack’ on Monday, July 28.
Startrack is a 3 day Athletics camp organised by South Somerset District Council and Yeovil Olympiads Athletics Club and offers young people aged between eight and 14 the opportunity to learn the basic skills of athletics in a safe, competitive and inclusive environment.
The four-time Olympic long distance athlete, Jo Pavey, who has been training at Yeovil Athletics Arena in preparation to compete at the Commonwealth Games, stressed the importance of young people getting involved in athletics events such as Startrack.
Jo said, “It’s always good to see young people getting involved in grassroots sport and Startrack is a great way for young people to discover the exciting sport of Athletics. Participation in sport from a young age is incredibly beneficial and athletics has many disciplines so there is something for everyone. I’m sure that the participants will really enjoy their 3 days of coaching.”
Jonathan Calderbank, Facilities Management and Development Officer at South Somerset District Council said, “Following the incredible performance of Team GB at the Olympics and Paralympics in 2012 and continuing success in the World Championships, interest in athletics is high. There are only a few places left on Summer Startrack, so book now.
“Our Monday night Junior Athletics Sessions are at capacity and Startrack promises to be both energetic and inspiring. Startrack is British Athletics flagship grassroots programme and aims to build upon the Olympic legacy by giving young people real athletics experience across the country.”
Councillor Sylvia Seal, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture at South Somerset District Council says, “Activities such as Startrack channel the energy and enthusiasm of young people in a structured and positive environment.
“There can be no greater incentive to take part knowing that Startrack was the start of Jessica Ennis-Hill’s passion for athletics. She started her incredible journey on her local Startrack scheme as a 10 year old before joining an athletics club. Knowing this should really help to inspire these young athletes. Participants will also be taking part on the same track as Team GB star Jo Pavey has been training on this year.”
