Environment Secretary Liz Truss to visit Somerset

NEWLY-appointed Environment Secretary Liz Truss is to visit Somerset to check the progress of a massive dredging programme designed to reduce flooding problems on the Levels.

She has accepted an invitation from Bridgwater MP Ian Liddell-Grainger, who says it is ‘absolutely vital’ that there is a continuation of ministerial oversight of the Environment Agency operation.

He added: “Local people will want to be assured this issue has not been allowed to slip down the government agenda.

“Liz Truss is well aware of the problems we have had down here and how close we have come to losing large expanses of farmland for good - and is keen to see what solutions are being applied.

“We shall be working out a programme which will enable her to meet the farmers who suffered so much devastation but who are now putting in such tremendous efforts to get their land back into good heart.”

A date for the visit is hoped to be confirmed by the end of this week.

Let's hope that Liz , on her visit to BurrowBridge, Wellies or not !! Takes time to talk to the Residents, Farmers and Landowners, to understand the full dilemma that these residents have endured, over the last 9 months.
There is a Scrutiny Meeting on Friday in SDC HQ, where the individual Agencies / Partners will be Questioned as to how their performance on the ground measured up, and as to how the proposed 20 yr Plan, will work, and who will have the input and Control as to what outcomes are to be Actioned , when and by whom, my personal concern is that the Environment Agency, will, unless challenged be the Lead in this Venture, with their recent record, on inaction and bad policy making, spending on Wetland areas , rather than dredging, gives me grave concerns.
I will myself be attending, to air my views, and along with others, try to get a greater input from the Associated Internal Drainage Boards, to have more direct action from them.
