Minehead needs to 'up its game'

A MINEHEAD bed and breakfast owner was left embarrassed when a couple who had booked to stay for three days left after only a couple of hours saying there was ‘nothing to do in Minehead’.

The couple told Warren Eglese, who runs Lorna Doone Guest House, that the town wasn’t what they had expected and that it looked shabby.

Warren said: “It was a bit embarrassing and I agree the town does look a bit shabby but I wouldn’t say Minehead was that bad.

"We love Minehead, we don't think it's terrible, it's a beautiful area.

Warren added that he had noticed a decline in the number of people staying in the town.

“We’ve been running Lorna Doone for 12 years now and the past few years there has been a decline in bookings.

“It’s not just me; other bed and breakfasts have said the same as have cafes and other shops. “The good weather doesn’t seem to be bringing people in; I think more needs to be done to promote the town.

“If you look online, other Somerset seaside towns come much higher up in the search than Minehead.

"We know that the council has had cut backs but as a seaside town that relies on tourism, it needs to up its game a little."

West Somerset’s Cllr Mandy Chilcott who also chairs the Minehead Vision Group said she felt positive about the town’s future.

She said: “It’s hard to comment because I don’t know what the couple were looking for but Minehead is such a vibrant place to visit and to live in.

“There is so much for every one of all ages to do. “We have the seaside, the harbour, the town and the Railway which generates so many visitors.

“Then there’s Porlock, Dunster and the castle, Tropiquaria.

“Minehead isn’t perfect but nowhere is.

“We all need to work together to promote it and show and tell people about all of the wonderful things available to do.”

Perhaps the unhappy couple who stayed should have really gone to Torquay instead as this is a much more lively town than Minehead - not everyone wants lots of attractions/things to do! Rather than take it out on Minehead, chalk it down to experience and move on in life!

I think there is plenty to do and see, people just don't use their imaginations anymore, they expect things to be laid on for them all the time, there's plenty of sites and walks to to around the area. Obviously got to be from the city.

Minehead has got lots to offer in and around the Town. Sorry it couldn't live up to a couple of outsiders.

When I think of Minehead, vibrant does not spring to mind nowadays. It used to be many years ago. It would seem that the council is a little out of touch with reality.

I agree that people should 'use their imaginations' and not 'expect things to be laid on for them all the time', that said. Why 'obviously got to be from the city'?
We live in Taunton and love Minehead, we even used to travel there from Hampshire (and mother-in-law warned us that it's windy in Minehead). If Lorna Doone B & B will let us bring our dog, we'll guest with them for a few days!

Because in my experience, and it goes for the same with family i have in the city, every time they come down here they squat inside the house not going out and exploring everything the country has to offer. Taunton isn't a city either by the way lol. I'm not referring to typical 'townies' and fair enough a bit of research which b+b's let you have pets is always a good idea lol.

As a regular visitor to Minehead over the years, I just wanted to say what a lovely place it is with friendly and welcoming people. Perhaps the town needs evolution, not revolution to build upon its strengths as a traditional seaside resort? For example my home town of Durham has an annual summer "Streets" http://durhamstreets
of.co.uk/index.html with magicians, comedians and bands performing throughout the city. Something like this would seem to be a natural fit for Minehead and would be something Butlins and local performers could support and take part in. Similarly Durham's brass festival could be replicated in Minehead with all the wonderful bands in your area http://www.brassfest
ival.co.uk. Just a couple of thoughts from an outsider who has great affection for your part of the world. All the best!

Sounds like the couple should have gone on a City break!

I can just picture their sad little faces walking around Minehead.
What did they really expect?

I'd say any publicity for Minehead and this B&B is good publicity, I'd say the couples " complaint" has backfired on them!
