Yeovil College students project with Yarlington Housing
12:00pm Thursday 17th July 2014 in News
YEOVIL College students were given the opportunity to put their business knowledge to use and develop additional skills when they took part in a live project with a local Somerset housing association.
The students presented their ideas to Yarlington Communities Manager, Karen Davy, and Business Support Team Leader, Jody Underhill for a leaflet of local information, which will be given out to residents when they move into a new area.
The leaflets were all based on a design by Ashleigh Hook, selected following a visit to the offices when the nine students, studying for a BTEC Diploma (Level 1) Business Administration, had spent a morning shadowing staff in the Business Support Team at Yarlington Housing Group to gain an understanding of the organisation.
Ashleigh said ‘It was really exciting that my suggested design was chosen – I couldn’t believe it was going to be used for a real-life project! I’ve really enjoyed working on the task over the past few weeks and presenting my leaflet today.’ Lorraine Dash, Course Manager at Yeovil College said, ‘It’s fantastic that Yarlington have been able to offer this opportunity to our students. The practical nature of the project has allowed them to develop skills that are essential for working in many sectors, such as time management, self-discipline and independent enquiry skills.’ Yarlington’s Jody Underhill concluded ‘The students’ enthusiasm and motivation for this project was brilliant and they engaged with Yarlington employees, asking lots of questions to enable them to accurately produce their projects. The presentation of their final projects was of a high quality – we are looking forward to using the excellent work they’ve produced in our new resident packs!’
