A POLICEMAN from Bridgwater who has run four London marathons is planning his next gruelling fundraising challenge.

PC Tony Freeman (pictured), of Bridgwater police, is preparing to cycle the London Surrey 100 – Olympic route of 100 miles – starting at the QE11 Olympic park on August 10 and finishing at the Mall (Buckingham Palace) in aid of CLIC Sargent.

He told the Mercury: “It’s only the second year it has taken place. I did it last year and it was a challenge because I hadn’t done much cycling before. I was a little apprehensive, but it was enjoyable in the end.

“Last year I raised £1,000 for CLIC and I’d like to raise that amount again this year.

“My father was diagnosed with prostate cancer about two years ago and was given the all-clear eight months ago.

“Lots of people know someone with cancer and I thought a cancer charity for children would be a good cause.”

Tony, who was in the Royal Marines for 12 years, has been fundraising most of his life and has raised over £12,000 in the last ten years for various charities, such as Help for Heroes.

He added: “I’ve always been involved with fundraising. I’ve run four London Marathons and some half marathons. I don’t really train that much, I just go running occasionally.

“I also run an under-13s football club at Bishops Lydeard, I’m a parish councillor and I volunteer for a local youth club. I just like helping people.”
