A SUGARCRAFT student is celebrating winning top prize with her cake at the Burnham Bake Off.

Asta Howard, of Highbridge Road, Burnham, won the accolade after enrolling on a sugarcraft course with Somerset Skills and Learning this year.

Her winning cake was a 6in tall, 6in wide, with nine layers. It was filled with white chocolate, Italian meringue, buttercream and home-made blackcurrent preserve, topped with about 60 sugarcrafted sweet peas.

One of the judges was Glen Crosby from TV’s The Great British Bake Off.

Asta said: “Glen was really nice and chatty; he seemed impressed with the cake as well.

“I was very happy to win, and my children really enjoyed taking the prize cup into school to show and tell – I think they are more thrilled than I am!”

Asta enrolled on the course because she is interested in running her own cake business and has found the course and the tutor very helpful in developing her baking abilities.

She said: “The course was a bit challenging at first, but with the help and support of the tutor, I am really enjoying learning all the new techniques.”
