MILLIONS of people will be marking the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War on August 4.

The Weekly News is inviting readers to share their stories, memories and photographs from the era for a special piece in the paper to commemerate the anniversary.

People all across Somerset can also get involved in the lottery-funded Somerset Remembers project, which has launched an Online Community Archive where people can share photographs, letters and stories which have been passed down through the generations.

It is hoped the project will create a major historical resource for future generations.

Cllr David Hall, Somerset County Council's cabinet member for Heritage, said: "The online archive is exciting because it gives everyone a chance to engage in their own history.

"Beyond the national commemoration of toil and sacrifice, many will recall the personal stories which have been passed down by those who took part in the conflict. Those people are no longer able to share their stories so it is more important than ever that you share yours."

Did you have pictures, letters, diaries, or war records from a family member who was involved?

Did a relative serve with the Somerset Light Infantry? Is there a Red Cross nurse in the family?

Or have you been researching your village to mark the centenary?

You can contribute to the project at www.somersetremembers.com. The Somerset Remembers project is being led by Somerset Heritage Service and is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
