Summary

  • Park and ride at Henlade closed at around 6.30am.
  • County council says "travelling families" have moved on to site.
  • Facility likely to remain closed all of Wednesday and into Thursday.
  • Silk Mills park and ride still open.

9:40pm

Taunton Gateway Park & Ride will be open for business as usual tomorrow morning following the departure of travellers who had illegally occupied the site today Somerset County Council has said.

The travellers left the site peacefully at around 8pm.

The service will be operating as usual from 6.40am tomorrow (Thursday).

There will be a security presence on the site for the next 24 hours to ensure there are no further incidents and to reassure users of the service.

The Park and Ride Service was closed today due to health and safety concerns when around 30 travellers in cars and caravans set up camp late on Tuesday before the Park and Ride closed.

9:34pm

6:20pm

A statement by Somerset County Council said: "Taunton Gateway Park & Ride remains closed tonight after travellers illegally set up camp at the site yesterday.

A further assessment will be made first thing tomorrow morning by Somerset County Council officers and the police with a view to reopening as soon as possible.

Approximately 30 travellers in cars and caravans set up camp late last night shortly before the Park & Ride closed.

Pat Flaherty, Chief Executive of Somerset County Council, said: “As a Council we do a considerable amount to support the travelling community but this is totally unacceptable.

There have been reports of threatening behaviour and their actions have seriously inconvenienced hundreds of commuters today whilst putting a further strain on roads in Taunton.

We have taken legal action to remove them and hope to get the Park & Ride open again as soon as possible.”

The primary concern is for the safety of all users of the site. There are young children present and there is a risk of accidents due the large number of vehicle movements, so the decision was taken to close the Park & Ride.

Council officers are working hard to try to reopen the site for commuters as soon as possible."

3:46pm

Somerset County Council says the park-and-ride is likely to remain closed tomorrow - a more detailed update is expected shortly.

11:48am

The travellers gained access to the facility on Tuesday night before the gates closed, the county council has confirmed.

11:16am

Somerset County Council says it had no choice to close the park and ride and claims staff there were threatened.

10:28am

This was the scene at the park and ride earlier this morning. Traffic was built up heading in to Taunton.

An update on the situation is expected from the county council this afternoon.

9:10am

Somerset County Council says the bus service is still operating as normal but it is not serving the park and ride.

It is thought the bus is going as far as Blackbrook and turning around before heading back in to town.

COMMUTERS are facing disruption this morning (June 25) after travellers pitched up at the park and ride in Henlade, forcing it to close.

Somerset County Council confirmed staff and police are on-site to help affected motorists.

It said the facility has been closed "due to health and safety concerns after a number of travelling families arrived to camp at the site."

The Silk Mills park and ride remains open and motorists are advised to use that site plus town centre car parks.

A council spokesman said: "We are unable to estimate how long the park and ride will remain closed but it is likely to be all day today. A further update will be issued this afternoon.

"The site is closed due to families and children playing around caravans parked across the site making it extremely difficult for buses and cars to manoeuvre safely."

So once again its the poor hard working people who have to suffer and pay extra for parking and probably spend an extra hour getting into town, leaving them late for work/appointments.

Surely the council know this is a prime location for them to try and set up their caravans, why not tighten security or put in extra precautions, as this isn't the first time it has happened?

Either that or sod them, keep the P&R open and if they get hit it's their own problem, they shouldn't be there in the first place!

They are lovely folk, they don't go to toilet all over the site and I am sure they wont leave any damage or rubbish. Here is to hoping anyway I have heard about these amazing travellers but yet to meet them!

I for one think we didn't need this park and ride why not turn it into a traveller site. When they move its not normally far. Why cant a corner be set aside for them to use and keep half of it open. Is it ever full?

Yeah but they can afford it. Why go into a PARK AND RIDE and threaten staff, what are they protesting about? aren't these people meant to go to places in the woods away from civilization or on to traveler sites, isn't that what they like? they obviously don't like society but still rely on it, there is supposed to be quite a lot of sites being opened up for these people anyway. Why are they called travelers when they stay in one place for so long lol don't get me wrong some of them are nice people but some of them just like causing trouble.

the 90% 5ft women that make up taunton community policing team arent going to have the nerve to arrest 30 traveller families. They dont have the resources or the guts!

Have to get the all tactical aid groups from bristol downor a bust like that. 30 families with an average of 2 kids and 2 adults. Were you going to stick 60 adults and kids!

Anyway everyone knows you dont arrest travellers just for traveling thats breaching their human rights and persecution!

They will be off to some other poor sods land to throw the fecal matter about! Give them a 7day notice and send a few **** pcso's to keep an eye on the site so that trouble doesnt start thats the normal line.

Then when the go the council cant run up a £10k bill cleaning up their **** !

How on earth can you say that the park and ride is not needed.. I take it you have easy access to the town centre then? WIthout the Park and Ride I would not be able to do one of my part-time jobs.. I work 3 days a week in the town and travel from Ilminster, I use the FlexiRider ticket with allows me to park for 6 days (2 working weeks for me) at the cost of £11. I had to drive around to find a car park on Wednesday (more fuel = more cost) and had to pay £5.90 to park in town.
Without the park and ride being there it would cost me nearly £36 for the 2 weeks (that's £24 more)
Why should I have to pay more to go to work when the travellers go where they want, when they want, leave a mess & threaten staff at the P&R)
As for setting a corner aside for them, who is going to pay for cleaning up their personal waste and domestic rubbish? Perhaps you'd like to volunteer seeing as you can't wait to meet them!!!

A town the size of taunton does not need two park and rides the size they are. They both rarely half full close one. The silk mills one has never been finished anyway water pipes poking out the ground!

Part of the reason the travellers keep pitching up all over the place ( and i am not fan of theirs) is the council closed all the council provided sites. It would probably be cheaper to reopen these than clean up and police them every time they pitch up illegally.
