Somerfest 2014 "fantastic", say organisers

FROM parades to pedaloes, from circus skills to stiltwalkers – this year’s Somerfest had it all.

The festival returned to Taunton town centre on Saturday after last year’s successful opener.

A huge range of events and activities were on offer at a number of locations, including Goodland Gardens, High Street, Castle Green and Somerset Square.

One of the highlights was a parade that started on the River Tone before switching to land at the Town Bridge.

Artist Tim Hill brought in pedaloes, canoes and kayaks on the river and a stiltwalker and dragon on shore.

Live music in Goodlands Gardens, a new feature this year, also proved popular.

A proportion of proceeds from the bar, run by Mambo’s, will be presented to the Think Amy! road safety campaign, in memory of Taunton schoolgirl Amy Hofmeister.

Somerfest was organised by Taunton Deane Council, in partnership with groups including SASP (Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership) and Fuse Performance.

Council leader Mark Edwards said: “The feedback we have had has been so positive.

“The event brings people together to enjoy our top notch open spaces throughout the town and the river which is at its heart.

“It was a fantastic day. Now the hard work starts on planning next year’s event.”

Mark Edwards isn't the council leader just yet...

Well done to those who helped organise, but I wonder how much this event cost the public purse. Also what benefit of extra trade was brought to local shops?

I've actually heard quite a lot of negative comments about it this year, personally it seemed like a good event but I do feel it brought no benefit to the local businesses in Taunton, no additional trade etc
Taunton seems to be focusing too much on bringing part time traders into the town (who do not pay rents & rates) and not enough on the local shops & businesses who are here 24/7 trying to survive

What negative comments, it was a fantastic day enjoyed by hundreds of people from the local area and farther afield. It promoted loads of good groups and clubs in the area and brought people in from other areas to see what Taunton is like. The knock on affect to businesses from events like this although not instantly noticeable is immeasurable. I say a big well done to the organisers and keep up the good work.

It was a great event! The weather was perfect and there were activities going on all over town. Well done to the organisers and I'm looking forward to the next one.

I'm surprised to see the negative comments above. Events like this are only good for the Town!
