A LAW firm is helping scouts to be prepared for the great outdoors with a cash boost towards new camping gear.

Yeovil-based Battens Solicitors, through its charitable trust, has donated £775 to the 3rd Sparkford Scouts for its appeal to raise £3,280 for dining tents for each patrol and group mess shelters, to replace outdated equipment and keep its young members dry.

Katherine Gilmour, a senior associate solicitor in Battens company commercial department, handed over the contribution to group scout leader Rob Butcher and scout leader Kevin Davies at the village hall in Sparkford, near Yeovil.

Rob said: "This superb contribution from Battens Charitable Trust moves our appeal on so much further.

"It will help give our beavers, cubs and scouts real opportunities to develop confidence, gain greater independence and learn new skills when they go camping.

"We all are very grateful to Battens Charitable Trust for such fabulous support."

The group, which has 58 beavers, cubs and scouts aged six to 14, applied to the Battens Charitable Trust to help it take its boys and girls camping more often.

The £775 contribution will buy two dining shelters at £385 each, a mess tent extension at £540 or go a long towards a mess tent at £1,200.

Members of the group, who come from Sparkford and the surrounding villages, have also been raising funds through their own activities, such as packing bags at supermarkets.

Young leader Joe Rawlings, 16, said: "We all enjoy going camping and new equipment will help make it even better for everyone."

The group also contributes to the community by helping in such local projects as clearing paths and assisting with church grounds.

Katherine said: "We chose the 3rd Sparkford group as they are a really deserving cause.

"They help out the local community so we decided to give something back to help them and wish them all the best with the rest of their fundraising."

Battens Solicitors set up the charitable trust in 1985 to support community initiatives, local charities and other causes.
