A ‘PLAN B’ site has been identified for a £7million centre for nuclear and low-carbon companies in Bridgwater.

Somerset County Council has decided to purchase land on the Woodlands Business Park for the ‘Low Carbon Energy Innovation and Collaboration Centre’.

The project, designed to capitalise on the nuclear power plant due to be built on land at Hinkley Point by EDF Energy, was due to be sited at the Bridgwater Gateway site.

In 2012, the Gateway site was identified as the “first option” for the centre and in December 2013 planning permission was granted.

But, with a June 2015 completion date needed to secure funding, a report released last week said: “To date, Bridgwater Gateway has not been able to complete all the matters needed to ensure the centre can be delivered on this site within the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funding timeframe.”

A spokesman for Somerset County Council said: “A separate planning application for a site at Woodlands in Bridgwater has been submitted.

“This project is extremely important to Bridgwater and to Somerset and we are preparing for all eventualities to ensure the centre is delivered to timescale and with government funding secured.”

Cllr David Hall, cabinet member for Business, Inward Invest-ment and Policy, said: “We have not abandoned the J24 site but it is important we have a Plan B, so we’re twin tracking.”

The centre hopes to promote a “thriving local economy attracting jobs and investment” and encourage the creation of “thousands of jobs and apprenticeships in Somerset”.

It will provide “flexible office space” for low carbon energy businesses, such as the Hinkley supply chain but also other nuclear, solar, wind energy businesses.

The centre will encourage joint ventures by sharing space and allowing businesses to work on projects together.

Cllr David Huxtable, cabinet member for resources, said: “This is an alternative option which would go ahead if the power station went ahead.

“This project would be financed by the European Regional Development Fund, Somerset County Council is Section 106 funding.”

Great news for Bridgwater, this will reduce some of the Traffic Movements through Bridgwater, !! But, it would help if like Myself, one had no idea just as to where Woodlands is, as a location in Bridgwater.
As a resident for 60 years, I do not know of it ??? Unless it's that big secret Place I found out 6 months ago called Puriton, half way up the Hill to Bibic, which is supposed to be having a flyover to take traffic into ROF.
Perhaps, like the actual highway junction changes for EDF which are also being kept close to their Chests, I have ashed Cllr David Hall Directly, as to actually what junctions are Affected, or even effected. Still no reply, !!!
Do they believe that if they do not release the info, we will let it go, without objecting.
Getting Information out of EDF, or Somerset C C is like getting Blood out of a stone, as the Saying goes.

Woodlands is on the A38 Dual carriageway, just past Dunball, on your left as you drive towards B/water, close to the UGLY Morrisons buildings.

I thank you for you info I was @ a loss to fathom out where it was, I was under the impression that the Staging Depot on the A38 was to be of the Round a bout @ Dunball, next to the Wharf before the Car Auction Unit.??
Still a bridge on top of a Sluice, is still the Best Answer for all of Somerset's Residents.
I am very disappointed that more signatures have not been added to my
Gov e- petition calling for, a review of Highway Proposals in connection with the Hinkley C Build Project. It's too late, when Construction is given approval.

A bridge over the Parrett and a link road between Dunball/Express Park and Cannington roundabout would have been great but won't happen. Also a shame there were no plans to create a road from Huntworth roundabout to A39 Skimmerton Lane junction via meads/Durleigh

Hope we see no comments about whose palm you got to grease to get a contract, if and when this happens. That blooby is a cunning rogue, a few years back his marquee was set on fire in the early hours. Who did it? - proobably he did it himself, he was seen out there shortly before. Why? - he wanted to look like the victim, not the attacker. What a devious khunt.

The Problem @ SCC is that there are only a Handful of Elected Councillors representing Bridgwater with County Council, Taunton has Control of the Budget and Purse strings.
You only have to look at the road improvements that have occurred within Taunton and the Creation of the Grass area behind the Castle Hotel, digging up a perfectly good Car Park, in their bid to rid the Town of Motorist, in favour of the Cyclists...........
We in Bridgwater have gone Streets ahead of Taunton in the Last 10 years with our Economic Development, and encouraging new business to our Town.
To the Detriment of Taunton, the Final Blow must have been the Re-Location of the Counties Police HQ........
I have for many many years, complained about the Lack of Spending from the 106 Developers Contributions to Highway improvement, these Monies are paid to SCC, by the Developers, but it rarely gets Attributed and Spent on the Development it was collected to improve.......Someth
ing is Drastically Wrong -
A Question amongst Many that I am Still awaiting From Cllr s Jon Osmon and Hall, since January, ( I allowed for the 4/6 week Flooding Issues ) before they were to respond, a second Letter obviously is required. ????
