A QUIET Sedgemoor village is getting a £3,000 device to help crack down on motorists speeding along its roads.

Brent Knoll Parish Council has bought a speed indicator device, which reminds drivers of their speed through the 30mph village.

Owen Cullwick, clerk to the council, said: “We agreed to purchase the device for £2,855, but it’s come to just under £3,000 with the batteries and things.

“It’s part of our whole mitigation for speeding, which has been a problem in the village for years.

“Speeding is an eternal problem in many villages, but by working with the police and putting all these things in place together, I think it will make a real difference.”

The device, which will be active in a few weeks, can also record data such as the dates and times people are speeding. The data will then be passed to police so they can work out the most effective time to do speed watch patrols.

Particular speeding hot spots include Brent Street and Burton Row, and the indicator can be moved around throughout the village to focus on different areas.

Mr Cullwick added: “Brent Street has the school and parish hall nearby so we are particularly keen to ensure this area remains safe.

“I would encourage other villages to look at getting a speed indicator device.

“I’m also clerk to Wembdon Parish Council and I know we’ll be looking at getting one there.

“We budgeted for it, but there are also a number of grants which will help fund such a project.”
