PLANS to open a Wetherspoon in Wellington have been given the thumbs up by councillors.

The pub giant wants to open up in the town and has applied to Taunton Deane Council for permission to convert the Grade II listed old Town Hall in Fore Street.

The proposed move was discussed at Wellington Town Council’s planning meeting last night (June 2), with the majority of councillors agreeing it would benefit the town.

Comments will be passed on to Deane planners who will rule on the application at a later date.

The plans include seating for more than 120 customers, incorporating a beer garden on the Cornhill side of the building.

The bar and kitchen would be on the ground floor with a mix of fixed seating, stools, tables and drinks shelves.

Customers will primarily use the main entrance from Fore Street but access would also be available from North Street.

There will be male and female changing rooms for staff upstairs and customer toilets on the proposed plan of the lower ground floor, as well as the cellar and cooled beer store.

Monday’s planning meeting also heard that ITV are looking at opening up a regional hub in the former Town Hall above Wetherspoon, as reported by the County Gazette in February.
