A NEW-LOOK sports pavilion is part of the vision for the recreation ground in Wiveliscombe.

People are also being given the chance to shape the future of sports provision in the town after members of the Rec committee joined forces to launch an appeal.

Committee member Jeremy Toye, secretary of Wiveliscombe Tennis Club, said: “The idea was that a few of us from clubs and the committee would get together and have an informal discussion about what could be done to improve the facilities and appeal to people to have their say.

“The Rec belongs to the town as a war memorial. As it is the 100th anniversary of the First World War, it is a particularly good time to do it and there are clearly things that need doing.

“The pavilion needs upgrading and there are buildings that have been better days.”

As well as physical improvements at the ground, the committee is hoping to get more females active by offering other sports to users.

Jeremy hopes women will have a say in what sports they would like to see introduced in a bid to encourage interest.

He said: “Due to the nature of them, some sports are largely male dominated, with perhaps the exception of tennis.

“It would be good if we could get women involved in the appeal and we are also working with Kingsmead School with this as the majority of users are the younger generation.”

The Rec houses the open air swimming pool and plays host to cricket, rugby, tennis, junior football, karate and keep-fit clubs and groups.

Plans for a revamp and extra provision will be drawn up after feedback is received and the committee is hoping to have this done in June.

Jeremy added: “I think it is important to keep the character of the building but make improvements, particularly to the inside.

"We’re not going to be building a Wembley and access for cars is also not great so that needs to be looked at.”
