Upgrade for computers across Somerset libraries

PUBLIC computers in libraries across Somerset will receive a major upgrade starting next week.

The Library Service’s network of public computers will be replaced with new machines offering Windows 7 operating systems and the latest Microsoft Office software.

Details of when new equipment will be available in your library will be available at www.somerset.gov.uk/computersinlibraries in the coming weeks.

Microsoft operating systems do not stand still, so why upgrade to a system (Windows 7) that is about half way through it's life cycle.

Why not be more future proof and upgrade to Windows 8.1.

I agree theyardy but instead of Windows 8.1 run Linux a free operating system with open office or even a cloud based solution. Cloud is far better anyway, can access docs from anywhere, covering mobile devices/tablets as well. All you need is a browser Firefox or Chrome which is also free even in a commercial environment. Think of all the money you would save on licence costs then Windows 7, one less thing for our council tax to be used and spent on.
