Keep Williton Special steps up campaign
3:00pm Sunday 25th May 2014 in News
RESIDENTS fighting plans for a new supermarket in Williton have started an intensive leaflet drop as the next stage of their campaign.
Keep Williton Special will be sending leaflets to every house in the village setting out their case against David Gliddon’s plans.
Wendy Spencer, spokesperson for the group said: “Our reading of the public mood is that not only do people not want the supermarket, they are becoming increasingly irritated by Mr Gliddon repeatedly trying to get planning permission when the local authority has already made its views clear.”
They add that the development would be a disaster for the rest of the village, removing on-street parking in the centre and adding to the traffic problems.
“Mr Gliddon goes around claiming the scheme would be for the benefit of Williton. “He would be the only person to benefit; the rest of us could see our existing shops close,” Ms Spencer added.
Mr Gliddon said that the supermarket would bring job opportunities for people in Williton and also more shops.
He said: “I’ve already spoken to a greengrocer who said he would open a shop here if we had a supermarket and a few other retailers have said the same thing.”
