A COMMUNITY speedwatch scheme in Ilminster will be forced to stop unless volunteers come forward.

Ilminster beat manager PC Andy Stuart said the scheme was essential in reducing speeding in the town.

The number of speeding drivers in Ilminster has fallen more than 30% since it launched.

The voluntary position only requires a few hours a month to help monitor traffic speeds.

PC Stuart said: “Police volunteers do a fantastic job in support of the work of the police. Residents have spoken to me about speeding as an issue they are concerned about.

“These watches are one of the ways that police and volunteers are helping to tackle this issue.

“I would encourage people to get involved in community speedwatch schemes and to report any concerns they may have about speeding in their area to their local beat team.

“It gives our local communities the opportunity to get actively involved in road safety.”

Chief Inspector Yan Georgiou added: “Speeding is one of the four main causes of serious injuries and deaths on the region’s roads – along with drink/drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt and using a mobile phone.”

Anyone interested in volunteering should phone 101 and ask for PC 4115 Stuart, Ilminster, or alternatively email PC Stuart on the Constabulary website at www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/
