MORE parents will be sending their children to Taunton’s Holy Trinity Primary School following a £1million expansion.

Four new classrooms are being built at Holy Trinity Primary School, in Taunton, to help tackle a shortage of primary school places in the town.

The project, which also includes remodelling an existing building to accommodate a nursery, will provide space for an extra 120 pupils, taking the overall capacity up to 420 taught in 14 classrooms.

It will result in two classes for each age group, with no more mixed-age classes, while the annual intake of reception pupils will rise from 42 to 60.

A turf cutting ceremony was carried out this morning (Wednesday, May 14) and work is due to be completed before the end of this year.

Head teacher Nigel Bright said: “This is an exciting time for Holy Trinity.

“It will enable more children in our community to benefit from the high quality learning opportunities that are available at the school.

“I am pleased that we could work closely with the local authority on the increased provision of school places.”

Cllr Frances Nicholson, Somerset County Council cabinet member for schools and achievement, said: “I am delighted that Somerset County Council is able to invest in Holy Trinity Primary School. It is a very exciting project and I look forward to seeing its completion as soon as possible.”

Holy Trinity will be the fourth primary school in Taunton with a 420-pupil capacity.
