THE AA’s famous landmark ‘sentry box’ at the top of Porlock Hill is to be restored to its former glory.

The box has been removed for refurbishment and will be returned as soon as possible.

AA spokesman Gavin Hill-Smith told the County Gazette: “As a local landmark we hope to have it fully restored before the summer holiday season.”

Listed Building Consent required to carry out the work has been granted by Exmoor National Park.

Gavin Hill-Smith added: “AA boxes started out as shelters for patrols and were a common sight on the roads, eventually numbering around 800.

“However there are now only 19 remaining AA wooden sentry boxes on public roads.”
