Decision made to close Wellington register office
THE register office in Wellington is to close on Thursday (May 1), it has been confirmed.
The Corams Lane facilitywill be shut by Somerset County Council as part of cost-cutting measures.
Bosses say the move is an 'integral part of changes' as it looks to find £100million in savings over the next four years.
Cabinet member Cllr David Hall said: “This decision follows public and customer consultation as well as engagement with local Members and discussions with the General Register Office.
“We will focus on delivering from locations where the public want it most and not from buildings and locations that are not being used nearly enough.”
As reported by the County Gazette in April, the closure was proposed after finding it was under used.
A key decision was made last week pushing the plans through and people who need to record a birth, death or marriage will now have to travel to Taunton.
The Wellington office is run by part-time staff. The authority said no jobs will be lost and, subject to engagement, workers will be redeployed to the register office at Taunton's Old Municipal Building.
Talks are currently underway with Somerset Skills and Learning over the lease of the Corams Lane building.
According to the county council, Wellington's registration office is the least used out of 12 in Somerset.
Between April 2012 and March 2013, it said 156 births, 102 deaths and 34 notices of marriage or civil partnership were registered.
