A VOLUNTEER who set up a warehouse for donations to Somerset flood victims has been recognised by the Prime Minister.

The County Gazette nominated Paul Blackmore, of Westonzoyland, to attend a reception hosted by David Cameron in Downing Street, which recognised people who had gone above and beyond to help victims of the winter flooding.

Paul helped coordinate thousands of donations of food, water, clothing, bedding and other helpful items at the former Somerfield distribution centre in Huntworth, near Bridgwater.

Together with dedicated volunteers from the Flooding on the Levels Action Group (FLAG), Paul sorted and organised huge piles of donations to flood-hit families.

The Prime Minister thanked the guests “for showing the best of British spirit” and announced that £500,000 would be available for community foundations around the country in flood affected areas.

The PM also launched a new Points of Light award which recognises outstanding people who make a change in their community and inspire others, like Langport café owner Clare Aparicio, who raised money and delivered free meals to people during the floods.
