DOG walkers are being warned their dogs could be shot on sight if they worry livestock on the Quantock Hills.

Until July 31, dog owners are required by law to keep their pets on a lead on Open Access land, while in other areas of the countryside they should be under close control.

Sheep worrying is a regular problem on the hills, particularly in spring when sheep and lambs are at their most vulnerable, says the Quantock AONB service.

If a dog kills or harms livestock its owner can be liable to pay a significant fine and the value of the livestock, and the dog may be destroyed, the cost of which the owner will also have to pay.

Witnesses to a dog attack in progress should call 999, police on 101 or directly to the Quantock Hills AONB Office on 01823-451884.
