Carnival club joins with Westover School to create carnivalites of the future
A CARNIVAL club is hoping to develop the carnivalites of the future by partnering up with a local school.
British Flag CC has teamed up with Westover Green Community School and hopes to encourage pupils to become the club’s members in the future.
Children will get a chance to see what it’s like being with a successful carnival club and to take part in a range of carnival club activities.
These activities include stage set building workshops, fundraising events, costume and cart design, and stage performance workshops.
There will even be an opportunity for the children to visit the club’s shed just before carnival day and to take part in some of the performance related events.
Laura Nicholson, chairman of British Flag CC, said: “We have built a strong relationship with the school over the past few years through fundraising opportunities and having our club rehearsals at the school.
“Now with the support of Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival Committee, we are hoping to create a mini version of British Flag CC. I wish we had this kind of relationship with a carnival club when I was at school.”
The new partnership builds on the work completed by Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival Committee over recent years where local schools have been becoming more involved with Bridgwater Carnival celebrations.
These activities have included children’s dance parades, design and build model carnival cart competitions, the decorating of carnival squibs and masks, and a carnival literacy competition.
Dave Stokes, publicity officer for Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival, said: “This is a great opportunity for both the carnival club and for the school, and it takes our work with the local education sector to a whole new level.
“Local school children are the future of Bridgwater Carnival, and engaging children in Bridgwater Carnival activities is absolutely vital in ensuring the town’s carnival tradition continues to survive for many more generations to enjoy.”
