A TAUNTON rower hopes to get into the record books with an 'oarsome' race against time across the North Atlantic.

Chris 'Darby' Walters and colleague Elliot Dale, from Lyme Regis, unveiled details of their attempt to make the fastest crossing in June at a presentation at the Spirit Health Club, where Chris is training.

Taunton Deane Mayor went along to give her backing to the Precious Lives Atlantic Challenge in aid of the Children's Hospice South West.

Chris Walters said: “The Concept 2 rowing machine in the gym is one of the best available and being able to use it when the weather is bad and I can't get out to sea will make a real difference to my training.”

The intrepid duo plan to set off from New York on or around June 6 in their boat, Ride4PreciousLives - and hope to beat the current fastest time for two rowers of 55 days set by Norwegian fishermen George Harbo and Frank Samuelsen.
