PROUD mum Sheila Bourner is treating her son and daughter-in-law on Mother’s Day – rather than the other way round.
Sheila, who is 93, is throwing a small reception for Peter and Brenda Bourner, who are celebrating their golden wedding on Sunday.
“It’s quite a record for a mum to share a golden wedding day with her son and daughter-in-law on Mother’s Day,” said Sheila.
Peter and Brenda, who wed at St George’s Church, Wilton, in Taunton, on March 30, 1964, are well-known in Scouting circles.
Peter, who taught at the former Ladymead School for 35 years, held various posts with the Central Taunton Scout group, was district commissioner for Taunton, assistant county commissioner for Somerset and sat on the National Scout Board. He is still district president and archivist for the Somerset group.
Brenda, a retired bank clerk, was assistant cub leader with Central Taunton, ran the Taun-ton district Scout shop for over 20 years and was assistant treasurer for Taunton district.
Not unsurprisingly, the couple, who live in Taunton and have two daughters, first met at a Cub Scout camp.
Peter said: “It’s a coincidence that our golden wedding falls on Mother’s Day – it’s the first time it has happened in 50 years.”
