WHAT makes you ‘see red’? In his show, ‘Things That Make You Go Arrgghhh!!’ comedian Lee Hurst has been trawling the UK hearing audiences’ answers to that very question.

Each date has meant dicing with discovery – and tomorrow night (Wednesday) at Bridgwater Arts Centre will be no exception.

Surely there must be some common complaints from UK crowds?

Not as many as you might think, says Lee, so variable and detailed are the gripes.

He says: “In the interval get the audience to write down what winds them up.

“It’s really quite varied; more so than any other topic I’ve done in recent years. And people write lots as well.

“Often I get 30 or 40 bits of paper; so many that I can’t spread them out on a table anymore, because it’s several deep. Ask people what winds them up, and they just let rip.”

Ad-lib comedy is Lee’s shtick anyway – he’s shown his face on ‘Have I Got News For You’, been a panellist on ‘They Think It’s All Over’, and a regular guest on Channel 5's The Wright Stuff.

Hurst has had good reason of late to go “Aaarrggh!!” for somewhat different, physically painful reasons – after discovering he had a hernia towards the end of 2013 (OUCH). “But it’s not about me,” says Lee.

So do us Brits just need to cool down? “It can be the biggest thing that sets you off, like a massive sense of injustice, such as with what’s happening now in Ukraine, going down to someone pushing in front of you in a queue. You can have an equal amount of venom.

“Whatever happens, whatever you’ve witnessed, seems the most important thing in that moment. I think it’s more a human trait than a British trait, although we do just like to sit and suffer, so as a consequence moan more. The French would be out there setting fire to lorries.”

You can expect a thoroughly off-the-cuff night with this razor-sharp comic.
