AT 99, he’s Britain’s oldest barbershop singer – and he just so happens to have made his name in Taunton.
Born in Pontypridd, Wales, in 1915, Glyn Evans is the life president of the Rivertones Chorus, the singing group he founded in 1983.
Last month Glyn celebrated his 99th with a ‘momentous celebration’ for which he was joined by his fellow singers in the county town’s all-male acapella harmony group at the Cottage Inn in Wellington, his favourite haunt.
Jack Dennis, of the Rivertones, said: “There was a great turn-out, with well over 30 of our local members singing Happy Birthday in Welsh.”
Glyn joined the Tank Regiment in 1941 in his mid-20s and saw action in Sicily, Italy, Egypt, Palestine and Greece.
After the war he trained as a teacher, moving to Wellington to teach at Beech Grove Primary School before retiring.
He now sings with former pupil, now Rivertones Chorus’ director Peter Gover.
Jack added: “Glyn was on top form throughout the whole celebration and really enjoyed the whole evening.”
