A FLAG is aloft outside County Hall to mark Fly the Flag for the Commonwealth Day today (March 10).
Somerset County Council chairman David Fothergill was assisted by members of West Monkton Scout Group and Ruishton Guides in raising the Commonwealth Flag in Taunton.
The ceremony formed part of the largest single raising of the flag in the history of the Commonwealth.
The Queen officially ‘broke’ the flag outside Westminster Abbey and more than 500 flags were flown across the UK.
Cllr Fothergill said: “It was a great honour to take part in Fly the Flag for the Commonwealth Day, joining other communities across the world.
“There were flags flying at many locations of special significance – everywhere from Ben Nevis to Antarctica – and I’m pleased we were able to add Somerset to that list.”
