POLICE are confronting boy racers who have been plaguing an area of Bridgwater at night.

Residents living near The Clink and on Bristol Road say they are tired of being kept awake at night by the sound of revving engines and hefty exhausts.

But Sgt Gary Young, from Bridgwater Police, says the force is working with shops to ensure they put their metal barriers up at night and will also be stopping ‘boy racers’ and speaking to them about how the activity is impacting on those around them.

Sgt Young said: “Our traffic department has been made aware this is a problem in that area and we will be working with shops and giving advice to the drivers.

“PCSO Dan Wheller is the local PCSO and is working with our Road Policing Units leading the operation.”

Sharon Wyatt, who lives on Bristol Road, told the Mercury: “I can hear the loud car noises well into the night and it’s hard to sleep.

“They speed around by Sainsbury’s and McDonalds. If the barriers are going to be put up again then that may deter them, but I think it will help knowing there will be a police presence there.”

One Sunday afternoon last year, I was walking through the town centre and could hear revving engines and squealing tyres. I was going towards the docks and soon saw it was a group of lads in cars (at least two Green Beemers) 'performing' doughnuts and burnouts in the old Splash car park. Right next to a kids' play park.

At one point, the tyre smoke was so bad I couldn't see.

Pretty much right next door to the Police station.

I trust Sgt Young & PCSO Wheller will request to see the insurance certificate of these vehicles, in order to ascertain whether any modifications have been declared and (increased) premiums paid for. If not, the vehicle's registered owner is probably paying for insurance that is not valid...

I thought about reporting it, but because of the proximity to the police station, I'd be really, really suprised if they couldn't hear it themselves.

The Broadway also has an issue with boy racers who drag race each other from the traffic lights at North Street and the Taunton Road junction. There is CCTV and traffic monitoring cameras on this stretch of road and numerous accidents yet the police do nothing about it. This will be another 5 minute story that Avon and Somerset Constabulary will happily forget about next week.

I know everyone criticises the police but at this moment a lot of off duty police officers are protecting property that has had to be abandoned because of flooding. Yes they are getting paid but how many people would give up days off to protect others ? Why is this needed ? to catch the scum who loot and vandalise what is not theirs.

While we are on this subject, Do the Bridgwater Police have the resources to do more, and there is a speed limit as low as 20 mph 30 mph in the town, get the speed guns out and hide like you do the catch the innocent .

Quantock People for your information speed guns have to visible at all times should you get a speeding ticket and you did not see a static or mobile camera then report it. People should not be speeding in the first place ! ! How can they be innocent ?
