AN equipment hire service based in Bridgwater has donated vital gear to help flood victims.

With the majority of roads and walkways blocked as a result of the flooding, residents have been forced to use a narrow unlit footpath by the side of the River Parrett as the main form of access into Burrowbridge.

At night this walkway is particularly dangerous and so the Speedy depot in Taunton Road donated 32 ‘Fluorescent Uplights’ and a generator to power the industrial lights, which are designed to withstand the toughest conditions.

Michelle Akbiyik, regional account manager at Speedy who is co-ordinating the operation, said: “With warnings of further adverse weather and present water levels at an all time high, we’ll continue to work around the clock to do all that we can to protect those at risk.

“When the clean-up operation eventually begins, we’ll ensure our extensive range of equipment including pumps and dehumidifiers is available for those who need us the most.”

A supply of walkie talkies meant volunteers were able to communicate, as well as the lifeboats which were ferrying residents who were without power to safety.

Speedy also donated a portable toilet for local residents and authorities to use.

Customers who need round the clock support should call the In Case of Emergency (ICE) number, 0845 6099 999.
