A CHARITY designed to benefit young people in the name of a talented teenager from Horton who suffered a fatal brain aneurysm is up and running.
Jemima Layzell was just 13 when she unexpectedly collapsed on March 10, 2012, and died four days later at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.
She was a promising, popular and otherwise healthy Taunton School student who had ambitions of becoming an author.
Her death sent shockwaves through the community, and a Facebook page set up in her memory attracted more than 1,250 ‘likes’ and countless messages of support.
Jemima’s mum, Sophy, well-known in South Somerset for her work with Barrington-based MadD Drama (now known as MAKE), is launching the Jemima Layzell Trust with other members of the family.
The purpose of the charity is to raise money for causes dedicated to the advancement of health or saving young people’s lives, for youngsters in need through ill health relating to brain injury or trauma, and to encourage aspiring authors to reach their potential.
Mrs Layzell said: “I hear about such wonderful work by local charities such as bibic and The Project, and the families they help.
“Some children have been through horrendous life-changing experiences and I’m so proud the Jemima Layzell Trust will be able to help.
“Our priority is to help young people in the South-West, specifically young people who may be suffering mental health issues, trauma to the brain, or may be exceptionally talented writers.”
Jemima’s dream of becoming an author came true after her death when her family published her diaries as The Draft – proceeds from the sale are split equally between her sister, Amelia, now 13, and the trust.
A Latin dance night will be held to raise money for the trust from 7.30pm to 10pm on Friday, March 28, at the Perry Street Club in Tatworth.
Tickets at £12 include a light buffet and must be ordered in advance from Celia on 07971-675577.
